Smartick Method Learning Math The Fun Way

As homeschoolers I am always interested in new learning tools.  Learning the basics can be boring and difficult sometimes.  We tried a new learning tool last month, it’s called the Smartick Method.  Let me tell you a little about it. 🙂

What is Smartick?

The Smartick method is designed for kids ages 4-14 and your child can progress at their own pace.  This program started over in the EU and has now been introduced in the US.  Smartick is primarily used as an after school activity, it is only 15 minute sessions to keep children focused.  Students work on mental calculation and algebra while also developing
problem-solving and critical thinking skills. It also includes logic exercises that
help children improve both in logical reasoning a reading comprehension.

How does it work daily?

First, each child gets to create their own avatar, my sons is shown below. 😛  Then, 5 days out of the week, your children will log into their accounts, and complete their 15 minute sessions.  When they get the questions right they get a “tick”, which are like coins.  They can use the ticks to buy things for their avatar.  Getting a tick for getting the question right keeps the kids excited about learning.

There is also a parent dashboard where parents can log in to see study plans and how their child is doing.  You will also receive an email each time your child completes their session, letting you know how they did.  This program is based online, but parents can always reach out to a team of educators.

The sessions can be done on the computer or tablet.

Our Review

Both of my boys are homeschooled, age 5 and 6.  I knew I wanted to try out the Smartick Method when I first heard about it.  We do another math curriculum, but I thought this would be a fun way to practice different math skills.  My boys did their sessions on my computer because the tablets we have are Kindle Fire Tablets, and the program is not supported on those.  They do have an app for android or apple products.

Just as I thought, the boys loved this program.  The first thing they do when they wake up is beg me to do their math game on the computer.  My oldest son had a hard time at first because he is a perfectionist and it took him a little bit to get used the program, but after a couple days he figured it out and loves it.

One of my favorite features is if the kids get a question wrong, they get a chance at the end to go back and fix it.  I think this is great because it encourages them to try again.  I also really love how they send an email every time they complete a session.  You can see from the beginning emails compared to now how much they have progressed.

One other thing I really like is how it asks the kids how the feel every day and at the end it asks how the session went for them.

My only con is that we could not use it on our tablets.  I think this is one thing that would make it a little easier for us.  Overall, we love the Smartick Method and my boys continue to beg me to use it.  I think that is so important because they are having fun while learning.
