7 Ways to Increase Physical Activity in Daily Life
It’s important to take care of our bodies. I have learned this even more so as I have gotten older. Our bodies need physical activity for our mental and physical health. Emotions are energy in motion and when you don’t move that body things get stagnant.
Making small changes can add up to big health benefits for your mind and body.
Move every hour
If you have a Fitbit then you know all about this. My Fitbit prompts me to move every hour. This doesn’t have to be a full workout but just a little activity. Imagine if you started moving every hour? That would be great activity throughout your day.
These movements can be simple things like squats, jumping jacks, push ups, a small walk, lunges, etc. These are simple ways to increase physical activity in daily life.
Working out at home is really easy with today’s technology. If you get something like the Beachbody On Demand you can do any workout you want, anytime. I have this and I love it. Really helps keep working out fun.
Beachbody offers a 14 day free trial, so if you don’t like it, don’t pay for it!

Take the stairs
This is a very simple change and helps get your step count up for the day. I have a Fitbit to count my steps, it’s very motivating watching how active you can be everyday.
Wherever you go, don’t take the elevator (unless its unsafe at night). Maybe it will be 1 floor or maybe it will be 5 but this will help you get in extra physical activity daily. I know it’s an easier choice to take the elevator but commit yourself to taking the stairs. If you commit yourself to this then you won’t even have to think about it, you’ll just do it!
Park far away
If you have to find parking at work, the grocery store, an appointment, etc, park farther than you normally would. If you currently live a life that is not active at all then you can start slow, park a few rows farther and gradually go farther. Walking is good for you and just like the stairs, if you commit to it you won’t even think twice about doing it.
Walk anywhere you can
Do you live close enough to work, the gym, the store, etc, to walk? If your answer is yes, then walk there! Steps and small changes add up. Maybe you can’t do this every time but when you can, do it!
If you are like me and live out in the country, commit yourself to talking a walk around your neighborhood everyday. The fresh air and the exercise feels so good, trust me.
Play with your kids or like a kid
If you don’t have kids, play like one! Or maybe you have a niece or nephew you can babysit. 🙂
For those of you who have kids, you know how much kids want to play. They want to play all day long! Sometimes you are busy and can’t play, or maybe your making dinner or doing laundry while they play. But playing is so important, unleash your inner child!
Getting your whole family active is so important. You can take a walk, a bike ride, go to the park, play soccer or basketball, go swimming, so many options!
Dance
How many times are you at home listening to music and singing along to it? If your like me then ALL THE TIME! When you have time, dance. Maybe you only have ten minutes to spare and that’s okay, just dance. Moving that body however feels right, it doesn’t have to look good!
I love to turn on music and clean my house or cook while dancing too! Dancing is a great way to get in extra cardio and it’s fun. Definitely a win-win!
Walk the dog
If you don’t have a dog, you could go walk a shelter dog! If you do have a dog, get out there a take them on a walk. You will get exercise and your dog will love you for it!
Increasing Health Benefits
All of these small things add up to more daily activity. Commit yourself to these small changes and you will start to see a difference in your physical activity. The first time you walk those stairs you might be so out of breath, but by the 10th time it will be a breeze! This is how you increase your physical activity and take care of your body.
If you have a Fitbit or plan to purchase one, you can set your step goal on it. Try to meet that goal everyday. If you need some more steps for the day, talk a walk. All of these ways to increase physical activity in daily life will help you reach that step goal.
Being more active along with eating healthy foods with help you life a happy an healthy life.

What is your favorite way to fit activity into your day?
I am also curious on how many calories are burned with these HIIT workouts. I like to journal all of my workouts and calories burned. Has anyone monitored that?
It really depends on a lot of factors. A heart rate watch, like a fit bit, could help in determining that for you.
About how many calories does someone burn doing the HIIT routines mentioned at the beginning?
Calories burned depends on so many different factors. It will be different for every person.

Great tips! It’s not so hard to get up and moving once you find the motivation! I’m working on that for myself right now. Since having a little one in December, I’m finding that I’m super sluggish — until I start moving. Then I feel great! Just gotta work up to that level. 😉 Great post!
Thank you! I get like that sometimes too, but once I am up doing it I am always glad that I did!
