Easy Healthy Homemade Sloppy Joes

The other day I was grocery shopping and came across a can of sloppy joe mix.   Who doesn’t love sloppy joes?  Sloppy joes are a classic dinner from my childhood.  Every time I eat sloppy joes I think of my favorite Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, It Takes Two.  That was one of my favorite movies growing up so I always wanted to eat sloppy joes.  I haven’t eaten them much as an adult, maybe one or two times, and my kids have never had them.  So I came up with these easy healthy homemade sloppy joes.

Easy Healthy Homemade Sloppy Joes

This recipe is so simple, delicious, and best of all HEALTHY.  You only need a few ingredients, toss them in with the meat and you are good to go.  For this recipe I use lean ground turkey.  You can use any ground meat you want.  Lean ground beef would be equally delicious.


Brown the meat in a skillet and drain off the grease.  Make sure to do this step first, if you don’t your mixture will be very greasy.  After you brown the meat you will add onions, garlic, tomato sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.  Let simmer 20 minutes and then it’s time to eat.

Easy enough, right?

For my family I served these easy healthy homemade sloppy joes on wheat buns.  For a low-carb option you could serve it in butter lettuce cups.  I think this sloppy joe mixture would be so delicious stuffed into a sweet potato. 🙂  You could use my BBQ Chicken Sweet Potato Sliders recipe and swap out the chicken for the sloppy joe mixture. YUM!

Turn them into sliders and serve them at your next party.  To make ahead of time you could brown the turkey and then throw everything into a crockpot for your party.

Instructions
  1. Brown turkey in a skillet on medium heat for 6 minutes, season with salt and pepper, drain off the grease.
  2. Put turkey back into the skillet with the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally
  4. ENJOY!
