The other day I was grocery shopping and came across a can of sloppy joe mix.  I thought about how I hadn’t had a sloppy joe in a long time, I mean who doesn’t love sloppy joes?  I decided I would create my own Healthy Sloppy Joes.

Easy Healthy Homemade Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes remind me of one of my favorite movies growing up, It takes Two with Mary-Kate and Ashley.  I always wanted my mom to make sloppy joes because of this movie.  After thinking about this, I realized my kids have never had a sloppy joe!  GASP. I know, crazy, right?

My recipe for these Easy Healthy Homemade Sloppy Joes is so simple and uses ingredients that you probably already have in your house.  I like to make ground turkey sloppy joes, but you could use lean ground beef instead if you prefer.  The reason I use ground turkey is mainly for the price, lean ground turkey and lean ground beef both have benefits and one is not necessarily better for you than the other.  Lean ground turkey is cheaper, so that is my usual go to.

The usual go to for sloppy joes is a basic hamburger bun.  This is delicious, but I think this ground turkey sloppy joe recipe would be so good shoved into a sweet potato or made into a sweet potato slider.  I have a recipe for BBQ Chicken Sweet Potato Sliders that I think would be the perfect swap out for these healthy homemade sloppy joes.  Instead of the ground chicken patty, use the sloppy joe mix. Yum.

This recipe would also be great as an appetizer for any type of party.  Use slider buns instead of regular hamburger buns and I am sure this would be a hit.

How to make healthy sloppy joes 

Making these healthy sloppy joes is so simple, just dump and cook away!


-1 lb lean ground turkey
-1/2 onion, diced
-1 tsp garlic powder
-8 oz tomato sauce
-1/3 c ketchup
-1 tsp yellow mustard
-1 T white vinegar
-1/2 T Worcestershire sauce


First, brown your lean ground turkey in a skillet on medium heat.  Salt and pepper the ground turkey. Cook about 6 minutes then drain off the grease.  Put it back into the hot skillet.  Using a spatula or wooden spoon, chop the turkey up into small pieces in the pan.  I like mine to be pretty small, to give it the sloppy joe feeling.

Add in the rest of the ingredients, then bring to a boil.  Drop the heat to low and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After your healthy sloppy joe mixture is done, plop a scoop onto a bun and enjoy!

  1. Brown turkey in a skillet on medium heat for 6 minutes, season with salt and pepper, drain off the grease.
  2. Put turkey back into the skillet with the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally .
  4. ENJOY!
