What is an instant pot?

An instant pot is an electric pressure cooker.  There are different kinds that have different settings to make various things.  I have the Instant Pot Duo Nova 7-in-1 8 quart and I absolutely love it.  I usually like to keep it simple with my cooking methods and appliances but I have fallen in love with the Instant Pot and the Air FryerI talk about how much I love my air fryer in my Sweet and Spicy Air Fryer Chicken Wings recipe.

Tips for Making Sticky Rice in the Instant Pot

Tip#1- Don’t use the rice setting.

My Instant Pot has a rice setting but I don’t use it for this sticky rice recipe.  I made rice in the Instant Pot multiple times to perfect my favorite sticky rice recipe and found that the best way was to use high pressure and natural release.

Tip #2- Use a 1.25:1 Ratio of liquid:rice.

Most of the Instant Pot rice recipes say to use a 1:1 ratio of liquid to rice but I have found that makes the rice too dry for my liking.  The 1.25:1 ratio of liquid to rice give it the perfect texture.

Tip #3- Rinse the rice.

Even though I want my rice to be sticky, I still like to give it a really good rinse.  I found that if you don’t it will end up too gummy, we want it somewhat sticky but not mush.

My method for rinsing rice is to place it into a bowl, fill the bowl with water, swirl it around and then strain it and repeat until the water is somewhat clear.

Tip #4- Use broth instead of water.

I like to use chicken broth instead of water whenever I am making rice because it adds extra flavor.  You could also use beef, vegetable broth, or just water if you prefer.

Freezing Instant Pot Sticky Rice

Fresh rice freezes really well.  You can meal prep ahead of time by making one big batch of rice.

When the rice is done cooking, put it into a microwaveable and seal-able container.  Put the lid on immediately, this will keep the moisture in so when you reheat the sticky rice it is just as sticky and delicious as before.

Once it is cooled, pop it into the freezer.

Reheating it in the microwave takes no time at all.  The timing depends on your microwave and size of your container, so you might have to play with the timing a little bit.
