How To Make Banana Bread Healthier
When I make yummy snacks for my husband and kids, I like to make them as healthy as I can without sacrificing the taste. Have you ever tried a healthier recipe for something you love and it was just…not good? Me too! There is a happy medium.
Let me tell you how I make this recipe healthier but still delicious.
-Replace Butter With Unsweetened Applesauce
Applesauce is my favorite substitute for oil or butter when baking cake, brownies or sweet breads. It keeps the banana bread so moist, you can’t even tell the difference. I still use 1 tablespoon of butter for the streusel topping, I like the flavor the topping gives, you can leave it out if you prefer.
-Replace Sugar with Local Honey
There are so many different sweeteners out there, find what works for your family’s dietary needs. We love to use local honey in this recipe because that is what we usually have around our house. Local honey can help with allergies.
I still use 1/4 cup of sugar in the banana bread. I believe the extra sweetness is needed as to not ruin the taste. Cutting WAY back on the amount of sugar used helps make this a healthier banana bread option.
One thing I did not change in this recipe is the flour I use. I really don’t like baking much with whole wheat flour. It has more nutrients for you but it tastes way different in my opinion so I still use organic white flour. In my Healthy Banana Oatmeal Muffins recipe, I don’t use any flour and mix the batter up in a blender, maybe I will try to adapt that recipe to a loaf!
Healthier Banana Bread with Streusel Topping
Banana bread is always a hit around my house. I love making a couple loaves at a time, one loaf with chocolate chips for my kids and one with walnuts for me! Keeping the healthier banana bread on hand is great for snacks or a quick breakfast.
Sometimes my kids eat bananas very quickly and sometimes I’m left with a bunch of brown bananas. This is when banana bread is just necessary. 🙂

This recipe comes together pretty quickly. I had my kids smashing the bananas for me!

How To Make Streusel Topping For Banana Bread
In a small mixing bowl, mix together all the streusel ingredients. I just use my fingers, they work better than anything else.

Bake for 40-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
